1674 MORDEN, Robert
Between 1673 and 1696 Robert Morden published some 13 separate
maps of England and the British Isles. The first of these, published with
Robert Greene, is striking for its title cartouche with two large naval vessels
flanking the title and many other ships both above this and others scattered
around the coast of England and Wales. (There also seems to be a pun on the
word seahorse in the North Sea!) Also unusual are the inset maps top and bottom
left with attractive borders.
A year after advertising the earlier map, Morden and Greene
advertised a six sheet wall map in the May 1674 Term Catalogue. It was
advertised again in the London Gazette over a year later but the map is
clearly dated 1674 so was probably brought out when promised.
Shirley notes that the large banner header title is wider than
the only copy of the map known (BnF) which is smaller than originally
advertised, suggesting tables should have been included to left and right
outside the border. The main cartouche is a dedication to Charles II which is
dated.
Shirley notes that the road system is not as extensive as Morden
and Greene´s map of 1673 but, whereas the former was confined to England and
Wales, this map also shows a number of roads through Scotland and Ireland.
