1690            SCHENK, Peter

Both Frederick de Wit (1630-1706) and Pieter Schenk (1660-1718) were mapsellers working from premises in Amsterdam. While De Wit was a prolific publisher of maps, Schenk`s output was more limited. De Wit published 6 separate maps of the British Isles between 1654 andc1690 (Shirley De Wit 1-6). Schenk is known to have published only two; both produced in 1690 about the time of De Wit´s final map and one of them was very similar to De Wit´s sheet.

Schenk´s second map is the only one to have shown roads, although few are shown, the emphases being on the main routes out of London. E.g. only one road enters Devon from the east, and then splits into two branches west of Exeter, the northern route ceasing at Launceston, the southern route continuing to Penzance and St Ives.

More known for his artistic output he did, however, cooperate with the Valck family and published a number of their maps; county maps first published by Jansson have the Schenk and Valck imprint circa 1714 (see B&B 11.4 for Devon). Schenk´s Atlas Contractus was published about 1700. His son (Pieter II) continued the business after his death in 1718 or 1719.
