1695  MORDEN, Robert (Camden)

The story of the maps commissioned for Edmund Gibson's translation of Camden´s Britannia can be found under Morden 1701. Camden´s Britannia work included a general map of England (and Wales) and a set of county maps.  This was first published by Abel Swale and Awnsham & John Churchill in 1695. The Britannia maps did not include roads at this time, they were not added until the third edition appeared in 1753. However, the general map of England did show ain roads and four are seen entering Devon and three Cornwall (i.e. from the east).

However, this is the first series of maps to mark longitude in minutes of time from London (top border) as well as in degrees (bottom border); this was useful during a period when time was not yet standardised across the country. Gibson's Britannia was republished in 1722, 1730, 1753 and 1772. The maps were updated for the 1722 edition, mostly with changes to place name spellings and the plates were reworked for the 1753 edition due to wear caused by the printing process.
