1634 PIERS, Matthew
Mathew Piers´ A New Almanacke and Prognostication for the yeere of our Lord God … appeared continuously from 1634 to 1641.[1] Unlike most other almanacs this one had its astrological charts calculated for the Latitude and Meridian of the City of Durham, the Pole Articke being elevated 55 degrees. Piers, too, professed to be a Student in the Mathematicks. with copies from 1637, 1638, 1639 all with description of the roads.
In the first year (known) of publication the Prognostication was by Matthew Pierce, student in the mathematickes (hence this Almanac is often catalogued under Matthew Pierce).
A prognostication for the yeare of our Redemption, 1634, being the second from the bissextile or leap-yeare : containing a description of the times and seasons limited by the Cœlestiall Bodies, with other observations both civill and physicall, pleasant and profitable for all men of what sort soever.
As is usual for a
large number of the Almanackes, the Prognostication had its own
title page and this section may be printed by a different printer. The Almanacke
for 1641, for example, was printed at London by Io Dawson for the Company of
Stationers, while the Prognostication was Printed by E P for the
Company of Stationers. The odd pages of the Prognostication (only)
are headed alternately Piers and Pierce. Other printers involved,
for example, were 1634 and 1635 Printed by E[liz.]. A[llde]; 1637 By Tho.
Cotes; and in 1638 Printed by R. Bishop.
The following
copies are reported: 1634, 1635 (both at BL and LPL), 1637, 1638,
1639 (all LPL), 1640 (BL), 1641 (BL, B, TCD).
